What is concussion?
Concussion has always been present in contact sport but it is only in recent years it has been brought under the spotlight due to research and media attention. You do not need to have been knocked out to have a concussion and it can occur at any age.
It is caused by a sudden movement or blow to the head, often when being tackled or hitting the head off the ground.
What are the concussion symptoms?
Symptoms can be immediate or develop over time. They can include one or more of the following:
- Loss of memory
- Double vision
- Sensitive to light
- Difficulty sleeping
- Unable to concentrate
- Neck pain
If you experience any of these symptoms after sustaining a head injury, it is advisable to seek immediate medical attention.
How can Physiotherapy help?
We will carry out an in-depth assessment of your symptoms, including a questionnaire and physical examination. We will then implement a progressive, step-like exercise programme to ensure you safely return to sport.
When can I return to sport?
A player can return to sport once they have completed all stages of the rehabilitation process with no symptoms.
Each sport has their own timeframe; for example, the Irish Rugby Football Union recommends a period of at least 2 weeks before playing again.
