Types of sports injury

There are many different kinds of injuries that can occur while you’re pushing yourself to your limits. Here at the Physio Performance Clinic, we pride ourselves on the ability to identify your issue and design a treatment plan that suits you. Here are some of the most common sports injuries that can happen.

Among the most common sports related injuries are sprains and strains. This can occur when stretching or exerting your body during physical activity. A strain refers to tearing or overly stretching the tendons and muscles and a sprain is when the same occurs to the ligaments. Typically to alleviate the discomfort from a strain or sprain, elevation and gentle compression are used to reduce swelling and bring relief, as well as rehabilitation exercises to regain lost mobility. Depending on the severity, the use of braces or supports may also be necessary.

Suffering a fracture or dislocation during a sporting event or physical activity can be catastrophic, almost certainly requiring immediate hospital care. Whether your injury affects your neck, back, arms and hands, legs and feet or any other part of the body, our therapists aim to help you with your rehabilitation and recovery, getting you back to your best and competing again. Through the use of manual manipulation and stretches we can give you back some of that lost mobility, speeding up the recovery process and bringing your confidence up.

Running is a great way to keep fit. It is also one of the most common causes of sports injury. Injuries to the Achilles tendon, which is the tendon that connects the heel bone to the calf, are among the most frequent. This tendon can stretch or tear when under stress, causing pain and reduced mobility. Shin splints are another common form of running injury, this typically occurs due to overuse and is characterised by pain and tenderness running across the shins. It is an inflammation of the tissues connecting the shin bone to muscle.

ACL stands for anterior cruciate ligament. It is a ligament inside the knee that is typically under heavy stress during activities such as running or jumping and is generally most associated with sports such as football or basketball. Our ACL Injury Rehab Programme can help you with personalised care and support through your ACL recovery, getting you back to competing confidently.

The rotator cuff is a group of muscles that surround the shoulder joint. Their purpose is to support the shoulder joint when in movement and during physical activity. A rotator cuff injury is most common among sports and activities involving large shoulder movements, such as tennis, swimming or basketball. Our clinicians will work with you to find the most appropriate treatment to suit your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions About Physiotherapy

What is Physiotherapy?

The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy states:

‘Physiotherapy helps restore movement and function when someone is affected by injury, illness or disability’.

This is achieved by assessing someones injury, finding a diagnosis and implementing a treatment plan.

The treatment can consist of a range of techniques, including:

  • Soft tissue therapy
  • Deep tissue massage
  • Joint mobilisation
  • Joint manipulation
  • Flexibility exercises
  • Strength exercises
  • Sports specific exercises
  • Advice
  • Acupuncture/dry needling
  • Strapping or taping

Physiotherapists work in a range of specialities such as Respiratory, Neurology and Cardiology.

Here at Physio Performance Belfast we specialise in musculoskeletal injuries and sports injuries.

How Long Does Physiotherapy take To Work?

There is no straightforward answer to this question.

For the average injury the timeframe would be 4-6 weeks and there should be a gradual improvement each week.

Recovery depends on many factors, such as:

Degree of injury – for example, a ligament injury is defined as mild, moderate or severe.  The recovery time can last from 2-12 weeks.

Compliance – most people will be given advice and rehabilitation exercises to do between Physiotherapy sessions.  The more compliant someone is with their treatment plan, the sooner they recover.

Diagnosis – the key to effective recovery is the correct diagnosis.  the wrong diagnosis can result in the wrong treatment and a delay in recovery.

Genetics – some people are quicker healers than others.  If two people have the same injury, they would likely recover at different rates.

It is important that people make progress with treatment but if after 2-3 weeks of therapy, and there is no improvement, further investigation of the problem may be required in the form of an x-ray or MRI scan.

What To Wear To Physiotherapy

Attending a Physiotherapy appointment for the first time can be apprehensive.

People wonder what they should wear.

To carry out an assessment the Physiotherapist will ask to see the area that is giving you the problem.

This will allow the Physiotherapist to look for bruising, swelling and any deformities.

The treatment may also consist of hands on treatment which will require access to the problem area.

However, if you are not comfortable with this, it may be possible to assess you through your clothes.

The following should help you to decide what to wear to your appointment:

Upper body, neck or shoulder injuries – you will be asked to remove your top but for females a strapped top will work.

Lower back – you will be asked to remove your top to assess and treat your spine but females can roll their top up and tuck it under the bra strap.

Hip and groin injuries – shorts or leggings.

Knee, ankle or foot injuries – shorts or leggings that can roll up past the knees.

At no point will you ever be asked to remove your underwear.

If you need to change out of work clothes and into shorts etc., the therapist will leave the room and give you time to get changed.
